Okay, hit me.
Meet your new favourite soulful pop star. He’s got moody electro bops for days, and looks like the coolest kid at a Peckham rooftop bar.
Well, who could say no to that cherubic mug?
Good point. But there’s more to Kena than meets the eye. When he dropped his early tracks, the 20-year-old Londoner didn’t even show his face.
Yes, but now he’s emerging into the light. Gleaming recent single ‘You Don’t Know’ toughens up retro soul by sounding something like a Prince x The Weeknd collab. Then there’s hypnotic new tune ‘Silhouette’, which cleverly pairs an airy beat with dramatic string flourishes. Kena has a knack for turning intimate, well-crafted tracks into proper showstoppers.
So he’s got the tunes, but has he got the vocal touch?
Definitely. His shiver-inducing high register is pretty special. Kendrick Lamar was so impressed with Kena’s cover of his track ‘These Walls’ that he paid the Londoner a surprise visit when they were both recording in LA.
Sold. When can I hear this awesome-sounding voice IRL?
Soon. Kena’s announced a Camden gig for later this month. Support comes from buzzy glitch-R&B newcomer Nakala, so sack off going to the pub before and get down there early to catch two rising stars for the price of one.
Moss Kena plays The Camden Assembly on Nov 22.
