“Spellbinding, hallucinatory, exuberant.” —Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

On a snowy night in February 1972, legendary jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife, Helen, during a gig at a club in New York City. The murder sent shockwaves through the jazz community, and the memory of the event still haunts those who knew the Morgans. Helen served prison time for the crime and, following her release, retreated into obscurity.

Over 20 years later, a chance encounter led Helen to agree to a remarkable interview. Her revealing enumerations on their relationship act as a refrain throughout the film, which draws on a wealth of archival photographs and footage, interviews with friends and band mates, and incredible jazz music. Part true-crime tale, part love story, and an all-out musical treat, the film is a stirring tribute to two unique personalities and the music that brought them together. Featuring cinematography by the Louisville-born and raised Oscar-nominated DP Bradford Young (Arrival). 2016, Sweden/U.S., DCP, 91 minutes. Recommended for 13+.

*This screening will feature an introduction and post-screening discussion with UofL Pan-African Studies Assistant Professor, W.S. Tkweme.
