Kentucky Derby Museum says
Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Famer Mike Veach headlines this season’s final installment of the Kentucky Derby Museum’s Legends Series Thursday, Aug. 6. Veach will lead the crowd in a tasting of three drinks, including two limited release expressions: Michter's US* 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Michter’s US* 1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon (limited release expression) and Michter’s US* 1 Barrel Strength Kentucky Straight Rye (limited release expression).

Hosted by Museum Bourbon Authority and Wall Street Journal Best Selling Author Fred Minnick, the Legends Series is an ongoing celebration of the culture, people and history of bourbon. Minnick will interview Veach in the style of a journalistic talk show, and the event will conclude with a Q&A segment where audience members will have the chance to ask their own questions. Doors open for the event at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $50 ($45 for Museum members), which includes appetizers and a tasting of the three bourbons. Tickets can be purchased at www.derbymuseum.org or by calling (502) 992-5903.

Veach wrote Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey: An American Heritage in 2013, shining a light on bourbon's pivotal place in the national heritage and presenting the most complete and wide-ranging history of bourbon available. He also wrote the foreword for the re-release of The Social History of Bourbon and has been published in The Bourbon Review and The Louisville Encyclopedia. He currently works for the Filson Historical Society, where he has been since 1997.

“Mike Veach is arguably the greatest bourbon historian to ever live,” Minnick said. “He has mentored many bourbon enthusiasts, including myself. The entire industry owes him an incredible debt of gratitude for his unwavering desire to provide a scholarly effort in bourbon history.”

All three bourbons in the tasting will offer a slightly different flavor. Michter’s US* 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon is made from a carefully selected mash bill that features the highest quality American corn, bottles of which will be available for purchase during the event. Michter’s US* 1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon is made by taking Michter’s US* 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon and then aging it for an additional period in a second custom made barrel. Each barrel of Michter's US* 1 Barrel Strength Kentucky Straight Rye is bottled at its particular alcohol level at the time of bottling, with the majority of barrels in the inaugural release ranging from 108 to 110.8 proof.

Veach represents the final installment of the 2014-15 series, following MGP Master Distiller Greg Metze, Wild Turkey Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley and Maker’s Mark Chairman Emeritus Bill Samuels, Jr. A new season of the Legends Series will begin in January 2016 and continue through February and March, with a full list of guests to be announced.
