“A unique and affecting memoir.”—A.O. Scott, New York Times

Documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson has traveled the world over the past 25 years capturing footage for directors such as Laura Poitras (The Oath, Citizenfour), Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11) and Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated).

Reflecting on her work, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects; the tension between the objectivity and intervention of a camera into a situation; and the interaction between the expectation of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. In a rich and compelling work that melds documentary, autobiography, and ethical inquiry, the film examines what it means to capture lives and experiences on camera. 2016, U.S., DCP, in English, Bosnian, Arabic, Dari, Hausa, and Fur with English subtitles, 102 minutes. Recommended for 13+.
