In this hybrid mix of fiction and documentary, Kiarostami focuses on an event that caused a sensation in the film-obsessed culture in Iran. A young man was arrested for impersonating the famous Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, going as far as convincing a family that they would be the stars of his new film.

In tracking down the imposter, Kiarostami develops a relationship with the trickster leading to a fascinating complex tale of movies, identity, artistic creation, truth and fandom. Voted as one of the top 50 films of all time in Sight & Sound’s 2012 poll. 1990, Iran, 35mm, in Farsi with English subtitles, 97 minutes.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, the film is a meditation on the will to live. A man traverses the hilly outskirts of Tehran in a car seeking someone to bury him in the grave he has already dug after he takes his own life. Even with large sums offered he has difficulty finding a partner.

With striking long takes, Kiarostami allows us to reflect on the moral quandary of this offer and the complex negotiations with the potential candidates for the task. 1997, Iran, 35mm, in Farsi with English subtitles, 99 minutes.
