The Speed Cinema presents "Eva Hesse" and "A Space Program."

"Eva Hesse"
Directed by Marcie Begleiter

Uncompromising and incredibly original, artist Eva Hesse created a stunning body of work during her brief life that was tragically cut short in 1970 at the age of 34. With a practice rooted in minimalism, she expanded her ideas through absurdity and through embracing access to new polymers and fiberglass that allowed her to create a work that was truly pliable to her vision.

Told through archival footage, her journals, correspondence, and interviews with her friends and colleagues such as Richard Sierra, Dan Graham, Sol Lewitt, and Carl Andrew; this documentary captures an artist who pushed herself and her materials to create a celebrated body of work that includes drawings, paintings, and sculptures that mesmerize, inspiring generations of artists.

"A Space Program"
Directed by Van Neistat

Internationally acclaimed artist Tom Sachs takes us along on a wild journey to the red planet through his intricately constructed handmade space control center and rocket. This documentary provides an intricate look into his studio and methods that culminated in the historic work, Space Program 2:0: MARS, which played at New York's Park Avenue Armory in 2012.

For the performances, Tom and his team built every piece for the journey from scratch under the philosophy of bricolage: creating and constructing each piece from available, yet limited, resources. The result is a funny and fascinating imaginative folk-art of sorts as two female astronauts gather samples from Mars.
