“Under the Sun offers a vision of social perfection that comes at the expense of messy truth and human complexity.”—Godfrey Cheshire, RogerEbert.com

Ukranian director Vitaly Mansky is one of the most acclaimed documentary filmmakers, known for capturing the unguarded moments of his subjects. In this case he worked with the North Korean government to document life in Pyongyang, North Korea. His government handlers had everything carefully scripted, but Mansky let his cameras role between takes, revealing the true nature of North Korean life.

This film is a fascinating take on the role of propaganda, truth, trust, and power as a father, mother, and daughter play the role of the perfect, successful North Korean family. 2016, Russia/Latvia/Germany/Czech Republic/North Korea, DCP, in Korean with English subtitles, 106 minutes.
