Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann

$18/$16 Speed Members/Free for Cinephile Members

This national series, programmed by the venerable film critics and curators Harlan and Susan Jacobson, features a sneak preview screening of an art house film before its release, followed by a discussion. The films are not announced until the week of the screening, with clues dropped in Speed social media a few days before. This series occurs monthly with events through April.

December’s selection, Toni Erdmann, made its spectacular debut in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. A German father has an unconventional approach to reconnect with his career-focused daughter during a prolonged and unappreciated stay at her adopted home in Romania. Alternating between hilarious and absurd, this heartfelt story has been a critical and box-office hit. It’s Germany’s submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. 2016, Germany, DCP, in German with English subtitles, 162 minutes.

Last year’s selections included provocative documentaries, indie comedies, foreign films, and Oscar-nominated titles such as 45 Years, Dheepan, and The Lady in the Van—all prior to their release. The September selection was the adaptation of the best-selling book A Man Called Ove, the October edition followed with the ground-breaking Moonlight, and the Cannes Palme d’Or winning I, Daniel Blake in November.
