Sure, we know how essential Manchester has been, and continues to be, to our LGBTQ+ communities, locally, nationally, and internationally.

But away from the attractions of the Gay Village and its bars and clubs, Manchester offers more to do for not-straight residents and visitors than just a drink and a cruise.

Mainstream art galleries in Manchester cinemas and theatres are featuring the work of queer artists more and more, but there are still underground gems to be found too.

Here's our pick of five queer-tastic things going on in the city this summer, both big and small.

Top five queer events

Queer art collective Friends of Dorothy have brought 2 of Manchester's finest artists together again in an exhibition of new visual artworks by legendary avant-garde performance artist, David Hoyle and iconic photographer and visual digital creative, Lee Baxter. The pair have developed the show via experiences developed during the pandemic lockdown and the work includes highly political art drawing on the themes of life, love, death and disco.

From Saturday September 4

Hope Mill Theatre continues to astound with its ambitious productions in such an intimate space. This is the second time around for their popular version of Rent (it had to go online first time around due to Covid), so fans will at last have the chance to see it live, good and proper. The story of misfit struggling artists facing poverty and AIDS in New York in the 80s is far from being a great musical, but Hope Mill's production is as good a one as you'll get to see.

The Pink Picnic

Who doesn't love a nice stroll with the promise of a blanket on the ground and a warm sandwich thrown in? The Ponk Picnic is Salford’s annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans & Non-binary, plus pride celebration, taking place in the delightful surrounds of Peel Park.

Saturday August 7

Manchester's annual celebration of all things LGBTQ+ is back with the promise of an explosive, energetic party after last year's virtual experience. From live music, the Superbia cultural programme, Monday night's candlelight vigil, check our ultimate guide to Pride.

  • Art

Salford Museum and Art Gallery brings together four Salford artists commissioned to create brand new work that will be shown alongside established greats like LS Lowry. ‘You Belong Here’ explores the places, people and history of some of Salford's overlooked stories and places. Manchester drag artist Cheddar Gorgeous explores the tale of 'the gray lady' who supposedly haunts the woods around Little Houlton, making this an unexpectedly queer experience.

Now until Sunday November 28

It may be best known for its musical legacy, having gifted the world the likes of the Stone Roses, the Smiths and (however temporarily) legendary club the Hacienda. But don’t get hung up on the past – our pick of the best things to do in Manchester right now shows this city’s evolving at a staggering pace.
