Join us for our Brunch & Learn event with special guest Dr. Earnestine Jenkins, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Memphis. Dr. Jenkins will speak on her newest book Race, Representation and Photography in 19th Century Memphis: From Slavery to Jim Crow. Dr. Jenkins will highlight people, places, and events linked to the history of slavery, the Civil War, reconstruction and the Jim Crow in the area. Her lecture will take a close look at African American life in 19th century Memphis. We will have food and drinks for members to enjoy while we listen to Dr. Jenkins present her lecture.

ABOUT DR. JENKINS: Dr. Earnestine Jenkins is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Memphis. Dr. Jenkins has played a large role in the documentation of African American History in Memphis. She has curated and developed exhibits at the Brooks Museum, National Civil Rights Museum and the University of Memphis. In addition to doing extensive research on African American expressive culture and aesthetics, Dr. Jenkins is the author of Race, Representation and Photography in 19th Century Memphis: from Emancipation to Jim Crow, and is focusing on a new book titled Photography & the Aesthetics of the “New Negro” Ideology: Picturing African American Communities in Early 20th Century Memphis.

ABOUT BRUNCH & LEARN: Brunch & Learn events at the Metal Museum are a series of lectures that give members an opportunity to learn about an artists' practice while enjoying brunch at the Museum.
