Memphis Botanic Garden says
Come and explore the magic of dyeing with natural indigo.

We’ll have several vat strengths going and lots of materials with which you can explore making resists (un-dyed areas). If the weather cooperates, we’ll do a reduction vat and a fermentation vat (no chemicals!).

Learn how indigo works and explore some different resist techniques using rubber bands, rocks, and poles (or just make it solid blue).

We’ll supply two cotton jersey scarves for you to dye, but indigo is addicting and you’re bound to want to find something else to put into the vat, so bring something else to dye, if you’d like. Cotton (or linen or bamboo…a cellulose fiber) is best (t-shirts, socks, dishtowels, pillowcases, fabric, canvas tennis shoes, cotton yarn, cotton clothesline), but we can make protein fibers (wool, silk) work as well. Items need to be no larger than what you can hold in two hands (no comforters please!).

Both Michael’s and Hobby Lobby have dyeables sections with white t-shirts, aprons, bags, hats, etc. Any item you bring needs to have been washed, preferably twice.

Please do not bring anything that is acrylic, polyester, spandex, lycra, or nylon. Indigo works best with natural fibers. We’ll also have extra jersey scarves available for purchase.

Blue will be your new favorite color! Attendees need to wear clothes that can get stained, as well as close-toed shoes that can get stained, and bring dishwashing gloves.

Call 901-636-4128 for more information or to register. MBG members $45/non-members $60.
