With the intention of creating a gallery in Mexico City that would represent contemporary artists, three friends decided to open the Kurimanzutto gallery. The idea was conceived between artist Gabriel Orozco, who lived in New York at the time, José Kuri, who was studying a master's degree at Columbia, and Mónica Manzutto, Kuri's now wife, who worked at the prestigious Marian Goodman gallery. They started with offices in the Condesa neighborhood on Mazatlan street and it’s rumored that they even sold work in the Medellín market. The space grew so much so that architect Alberto Kalach led the architectural side of their relocation to a house in the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood. Today, they represent very important artists at an international level.
