Almost identical to its neighbor, the Days Inn Thunderbird Beach Resort, the Travelodge Monaco is one of the last bastions of the tacky motel culture that once reigned supreme on Sunny Isles Beach. Built in 1954, it welcomes you with an iconic neon sign and a chintzy tropical lobby swimming in rattan furniture. It, too, boasts a tiki bar and courtyard swimming pool, where ageing housewives bake on old-school sun loungers. There’s a whiff of faded glory in the air, but it hasn’t descended into seediness.
