Since 1985, Taquerias El Mexicano has been a reliable favorite on Calle Ocho. The Mexican joint has kept it simple for the last three decades with classic tacos at attractive prices. And, before you think this is some sort of eulogy, we should mention that Taquerias El Mexicano is not closing. But a new chapter is about to unfold for the restaurant. The ownership team of Ball & Chain announced today that they have acquired ownership of the restaurant and will be running things from here on out.

What does that mean for Taquerias El Mexicano? Well, you’ll have some more options next time you go—especially in the cocktail department. There will be a full bar and new craft cocktail menu with variations of margaritas, palomas, a frozen horchata and more (a two-for-one happy hour will be offered daily from 3 to 7pm). The food menu, though, will remain the same.

Perhaps the biggest new addition to the place will be located upstairs, on the second floor. There, the Ball & Chain team are launching a new Mexican candy store, Los Altos Dulceria, where patrons can pick from a selection of made-in-Mexico sweets. That’s due to open by the end of October—just in time for Halloween, baby.
