The world is quickly turning on plastic. And that’s because, well, it sucks. We use it way too much, it’s ruining our oceans and it’s not even that fun to say. Plastic. Try it. Plastic. See?

Luckily, the world is also getting good at finding creative ways to combat our plastic problem. And local designer Michael Szklaver has done just that with MAVRANS, a splashy line of clothing that’s made from recycled plastics. Most of MAVRANS products start with plastic bottles collected from recycling plants. The evil plastic is melted and put through a process where it can be converted into thread. Then it finds a second life as a dope Miami Beach-ready bathing suit that’ll have you turning head on Ocean Drive, amigo.

The same technique is also being utilized by the UM football team this upcoming season in their new uniforms.

MAVRANS specializes in swimwear but also makes matching shirts as well as hats and backpacks. In addition to being made from recycled plastic, MAVRANS products also utilize digital printing, a practice Szklaver says helps minimize waste and dye usage.

You can check out the selection and order your own pair of eco-friendly swim trunks over at mavrans.com. To check them out in person, stop by the Soho Beach House during Labor Day weekend, where MAVRANS will be having a pop-up shop. Just shoot an email to michael@mavrans for entry.
