From March to October, south Florida beaches host the largest gathering of nesting sea turtles in the United States. Their numbers have diminished over the years because of the demand for meat, eggs and leather, and due to the loss of their habitat. Since 1980, thousands of endangered sea turtles have been hatched and released through this program, which is typically open for public participation from July to September. The release takes place in the evenings; call for specific times and details.
