Univocal Book Launch The Arachnean and Other Texts by Fernand Deligny Thursday, March 19, 6:30 – 8:30 pm Free and open to the public Once a well known experimental pedagogue and writer who had a major influence on the work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Fernand Deligny’s work has been rediscovered in the past ten years by a variety of artists, activists, and scholars who have re-encountered his poetic work regarding the “network as a mode of being”. The Arachnean and Other Texts is the first book-length English translation of Deligny’s work, and the proper introduction to a singular thinker and writer who strove to fend off violence and ideology in the most poetic and creative manner at his disposal. Cultural Theorist Drew Burk, one of the book’s translators, will give a short talk entitled Interacting with the unknown, a new image of thought: some notes on creative practice and the universe of Fernand Deligny. Burk will then share a short reading from the text. — Fernand Deligny was an experimental educator, novelist, and essayist known for his innovative work with children with severe autism. While his work once drew interest from such prominent thinkers as Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and Michel de Certeau, Deligny's creative practice of "the network as a mode of being" is continuing to be rediscovered today in a variety of academic fields. Drew Burk is an editor, poet, cultural theorist, and translator of contemporary French philosophy. He is also the director of Univocal, an independent publisher of philosophy, literature, poetry, and theory based in Minneapolis. Copies of Deligny's The Arachnean and Other Texts will be available for purchase at the event. Univocal Publishing is an independent publisher that has been producing books on philosophy, technology, art, and poetry since 2011. They are translating and publishing texts by continental thinkers such as Jean Baudrillard, Gilbert Simondon, Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Serres, and François Laruelle. These archival quality books with letterpress covers are printed and hand-bound at their Minneapolis atelier, where Univocal is reconstituting an old form of book making infused with contemporary thought and technology.
