My Open Studio this year is a Behind-The-Scenes look at my new large scale paintings and a project overview for my Artist Initiative Grant from the MN State Arts Board. I'll have works-in-progress and preliminary works that show my creative process and inspiration for this new series. There will also be finished paintings and drawings available for purchase, with a variety of price points. Prints are limited this year.

THEME
Recreating Secondary Memories: Previous generation’s memories become our memories as they are handed down to us. We retell stories to each new generation within our families that become part of our own memories and experiences. I'm recreating narratives of my interpretations of my grandfather’s stories, both lucid memories and surreal moments skewed by schizophrenia. An example: My grandfather’s surreal story of fighting and winning a boxing match with an enormous gorilla during the Vietnam War. These paintings will present varied narratives from mundanity, absurdity, gravity, and humor of life. In an attempt to reconstruct the past, I will raise questions and explore the issues of the transitory nature of memory, the ownership of stories and secrets, and the inconsistency of perspective with mental illness.

COMPLETE PROJECT
After Art-A-Whirl, I will present my finished large scale paintings and a professional video at my solo exhibition at a local gallery. The video documenting my process will be produced/directed by Berland Media, LLC. Keep an eye out on FB for sneak peek clips throughout the year!

J. M. Culver is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
