RED MOUNTAIN (Duluth): Red Mountain's debut album Scowl Lightly was voted Best Album of 2014 by readers of Perfect Duluth Day, and the record didn’t include fire dancers, aerialists or sequin costumes. Live shows, on the other hand, could include any of those things and more. Anton Jimenez-Koeckl and his Rhodes piano lead this avant-garde bohemian pop band, which has grown over the years to become a roughly nine-piece ensemble.

MATT LATTERELL (NE Minneapolis): "The road Matt Latterell took to arrive at the songs that would make up his stunning new album, Phase & Field, was long and winding. The singer-songwriter and hardworking sideman moved back home to Foley, Minnesota, four years ago, but gradually returned to the area following a series of breakups, bringing with him an impressive batch of nearly 60 songs inspired by his experiences. Latterell whittled those tracks down to 10 emotionally wrought, impeccably structured songs, with each number fueled by his plaintive vocals and Americana-laden arrangements. Latterell leaned on many of his talented friends in the local music community — as well as a generous grant he received from the Central Minnesota Arts Board — who were happy to welcome him back to Minneapolis. The gorgeous songs on Phase & Field reflect the long, fractured journey he took to get here, and the pain and wisdom he experienced along the way."
