Eleanor McGough / Elaine Rutherford

Opening Reception: Friday September 11th, 7 – 11 pm
Exhibition runs September 5th – 27th, 2015

Rosalux is pleased to present Museology – Elaine Rutherford and Eleanor McGough. The show title, Museology, alludes to the science or practice of organizing and arranging, specifically in relation to the museum collection.

Ideas of collections and multiples are seen in the works of both McGough and Rutherford. In each case these ideas are explored uniquely yet at the same time there is a shared aesthetic which is seen in reference to landscape, collecting, color and the overall contemplative quality of installation.

Eleanor McGough's paintings and installations of paper cut-outs explore our fleeting place in the larger patterns of weather, migrations, and time. Climate change, unpredictable natural forces, insects, and the mysterious qualities of flight all inform McGough's recent series of works. In this exhibition, McGough has created aerial map-like paintings along with an installation of hundreds of paper cut-outs animated by air motion that explore the concepts of multitudes, our attempts at possession of the natural world, and a sense of wonder.

Rutherford's work combines sound, video, sculpture, and painting with wax and other varied materials in powerful ways. Her current artwork reflects on the idea of museum as both an historical and contemporary construct. In the exhibition, Museology, Rutherford is creating an environment in which we might reflect on the museum as a space of institutionally curated time and memory and its role in shaping our perceptions of what is noteworthy and worth remembering.
