In the context of the U.S.’s “Pivot to Asia,” a delegation of activists from 25 countries traveled to the Philippines this summer for an International Solidarity Mission. Joe Iosbaker, a member of Freedom Road Socialist Organization and anti-war activist from Chicago, was one of 100 who came from the U.S.

The movement in the Philippines is making steady advances, guided by the Communist Party of the Philippines and the revolutionary National Democratic Front, which includes the New People’s Army (NPA). A U.S.-led counterinsurgency campaign has cost the lives of over 40,000 people in the past 47 years. But the revolutionary movement is making gains. The revolutionaries enjoy the support of millions in their base areas. They can move freely in 80 percent of Philippine territory while the enemy armed forces can occupy or control only ten percent at any given time.

Iosbaker visited the region known as Western Mindanao, the base of the U.S. troops in their counterinsurgency war against the NPA. He’ll talk about the mass movement, the revolutionary movement, the Communist Party, and their strategy for victory.
