The lush English-language period drama about Queen Kristina of Sweden is coming to the St. Anthony Main Theatre. Be sure to see this gorgeous film on the big screen while you have the chance.

THE GIRL KING tells the story of one of the world’s most famous and controversial women, 17th century Queen Kristina of Sweden. Crowned Queen in 1632 at the age of six and raised as a prince, Queen Kristina was a brilliant yet enigmatic young leader who fought conservative forces to revolutionize Sweden while falling in love with her lady-in-waiting and exploring her awakening sexuality. Torn between conflicts of political, religious, and personal aspirations, Kristina made one of the most controversial choices in history.

The film’s epic screenplay by French Canadian playwright Michel Marc Bouchard (Lilies, Tom at the Farm) is brought to the screen by esteemed director Mika Kaurismäki and features an impressive international cast including the stunning Swedish star Malin Buska as Kristina and Canadian actress Sarah Gadon (A Royal Night Out, Dracula Untold) as Kristina’s love interest, the Countess Ebba Sparre. The Girl King also stars: Michael Nyqvist, Lucas Bryant, Laura Birn, Martina Gedeck, Francois Arnaud, Patrick Bauchau, Hippolyte Giradot, Peter Lohmeyer.

* Best Actress Award - Malin Buska, 2015 Montreal Film Festival
* Audience Award, 2015 Montreal Film Festival

“A standout performance from Malin Buska, who plays the tomboy Queen with such a high level of intensity that you half expect her to jump through the screen.” — Film Journal International

"Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki’s historical biopic puts a modern slant on a young queen who scandalized Sweden with her rebellious sexual and political behavior." — The Hollywood Reporter

"There’s more than enough drama, complexity and speculative intrigue in the single decade of Christina’s adult reign to sustain an epic miniseries...The primary focus here is on the monarch’s passionate devotion to lady-in-waiting Countess Ebba Sparre (a wide-eyed Sarah Gadon), whose status becomes a matter of bawdy public rumor even before Christina appoints her official 'bedfellow.’” — Variety

"The Girl King is a traditional epic...what breaks the mold is the character of Christina, her aplomb, her very masculine energy, her tomboy outfits...her bold, challenging thinking is actually the heart of the story." — La Presse

"A steamy and sumptuous period piece." —
