Translators Hilary Kaplan, Alexis Levitin, Ellen Doré Watson, and Tiffany Higgins will present. Opening with a short reading, this panel will take up questions of how to transmit aesthetics and culture in poetry from an enormous nation with a complex history of race and class. What challenges does the translator of contemporary Brazilian writing face? The panelists will address the "Braziilianness" of the works they translate, and the issues that arise in bringing it to English.
Hilary Kaplan is the translator of Rilke Shake, a book of poems by Angélica Freitas, and Ghosts, a collection of stories by Paloma Vidal. She received a PEN Translation Fund award in 2011. Her translations of Brazilian poetry and prose have appeared on BBC Radio 4 and in journals internationally.
Alexis Levitin has been translating for the last forty years. His work has appeared in Grand Street, Partisan Review, Kenyon Review, American Poetry Review, New Letters, Prairie Schooner, and elsewhere. His 34 books include Clarice Lispector's Soulstorm and Eugenio de Andrade's Forbidden Words.
Ellen Doré Watson, director of the Poetry Center at Smith and poetry and translation editor of The Massachusetts Review, is author of 5 books of poems and has translated a dozen books from Portuguese, including the poems of Adélia Prado (Ex-Voto and The Alphabet in the Park), with an NEA Fellowship.
Tiffany Higgins is the author of And Aeneas Stares into Her Helmet, selected by Evie Shockley. Her poems appear in Poetry, Kenyon Review, Taos Journal, and From the Fishouse. She writes on ecocultural poetics and translates the work of Alex Simões and other contemporary Brazilian poets.
