Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Makenzie Flom graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Minnesota. She has been making art since childhood and is currently excited about painting, drawing, and printmaking. She explores anxiety, failure, and control in her work, emphasizing process and the context of youth. As recipient of the Jerome Residency for Emerging Printmakers, her work was exhibited most recently at Highpoint Center for Printmaking.

As a young person, young woman, and young artist, I’m interested in our coming of age stories as teenagers and young people and our tools for self-identification and autonomy. I’m interested in the uncertainty that penetrates every part of our lives, the control we wish we had, and the coolness we are always in pursuit of. Working with the human figure, the images I draw from provide an ambiguity of narrative and personality which allows room for expression and interpretation. Working alongside failure and taking risks, I negotiate between control and lack thereof, limiting the amount of authority I allow myself and my viewers.I find that the human figure is familiar and relatable, but by distorting proportions and embracing ambiguity, I hope to address the clumsiness of growing up.
