Where Back When J. M. Culver Solo Exhibition says
A Year in the Making - Large Scale Paintings by J. M. Culver

Including a Behind-the-Scenes Video
+ A special selection of Small Original Art will also be on display and for purchase ONLY at the Opening

A year in the making, J. M. Culver’s new colorful large-scale paintings explore reality and fantasy with a fresh perspective through generational storytelling. These massive figurative works bring the viewer through lucid and surreal scenes inspired by her grandfather’s stories and altered mental states. From sensory triggers to quiet moments, Culver uses secondary memories to visually explore character development, the strength of character, and the character as a metaphor.

Culver reimagines scenes of her grandfather fighting a gorilla during the Vietnam War, nostalgic days at the beach, and provocative hallucinations from his viewpoint. Bordering between representation and abstraction, these vivid paintings explore the emotive effect of color using both experimental and traditional mark making not seen in Culver’s past work.

As part of her Artist Initiative Grant project, this exhibition presents an intimate and tangible expression of memory that embraces universal themes of the human condition and of life at its brightest and darkest points. From dramatic character portraits to psychological narratives, Culver’s paintings explore the transitory nature of memory, the ownership of stories and secrets, and the inconsistency of perspective with mental illness and personal identity.

WHERE BACK WHEN presents a stimulating experience that invites us to take part in a colorful, provocative, and imaginary world of storytelling.

A behind-the-scenes video will be on display, giving an intimate view into the artist’s creative process and the challenges of working on a large-scale. Small original artwork will also be on display and available for purchase during the Opening Reception.

J. M. Culver is a fiscal year 2015 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
