One of the bigger—and yet one of the sneakiest—"openings" of the week came from Menu Extra, a pop-up operation which has started a new takeout and delivery project out of Osteria da Elda doing one small but luxuirant menu:

Pithiviers (French pastry pies) that are filled with duck and slabs of foie gras and served with a "Montreal Miso" sauce. Vegans take note, there's a friendly option made with vegetables that goes for a bit cheaper. They come with a burnt onion salad and a corn ice cream covered in a Montreal Miso caramel.

Right now, the group behind Menu Extra is selling them as part of a gourmet menu for two. $87 grabs you a meat pithivier with a salad and ice cream, and it's $60 for the vegan option that's served with sorbet instead of ice cream.

Maybe you don't know Menu Extra, but that wouldn't be a surprise.

A pop-up in the truest form, taking over restaurants for only a day at a time or running dining series that would last a weekend, the project has been run by an all-star team of up-and-coming names in Montreal: Camilo Lapointe Nascimento, a former sous-chef at Le Mousso the 2020 winner of Les Chefs!; Francis Blais, a former chef de cuisine of Le Mousso and winner of the latest season of Top Chef Canada; former Le Mousso sommelier Alexis Demers; and Montreal film director Martin Pariseau acting as the creative lead.

The pop-ups from Menu Extra were set up to raise money for local charities. According to a report by Eater Montreal, a total of nine events raked in $32,000 before the group went on hiatus from September 21 until October 4.

Now they're back at this new location for the foreseeable future and an unforgettable dish.

Menu Extra is open for orders all week long from 12pm to 7 pm, taking orders via their website for their current location at 5206 Boulevard Saint-Laurent; delivery is available from 12pm to 4pm.
