Montreal's annual French film festival Cinemania is going live tomorrow with an all-new digital platform this year. Beginning November 4 and running until November 22, it's a new hybrid edition that will feature as many as 50 feature films, documentaries, 30 short films, masterclasses, conferences and special events, along with some virtual reality experiences for anyone packing the appropriate gear.
For this year's edition, the festival has teamed up with the companies Festival Scope and Shift72 to create an online streaming platform that can be accessed via their website. From there, people can either 'purchase' the films they want to see and watch them wherever they want. Prices can vary, but the general pricing scheme for most movies is $8 for a single feature, $1 for short films, or $65 for an all-access pass.
According to Cinemania, all feature films will be available on the platform for 48 hours from the time on their schedule that they go live; once they do, viewers have six (6) hours to see it. "Certain films," Cinemania mentions in their FAQ, "especially short films, will be available online for the duration of the festival, with no time limit" during the duration of the entire festival.
The films featured come from a wide variety of francophone countries, such as Quebec, France, Luxembourg, Senegal, Belgium, Algeria, Morocco, the Ivory Coast, Switzerland, Central Africa and beyond. While the films are all in French, the festival makes a point of increasing its accessibility by subtitling everything in English.
