How old is the Montreal Metro?

The Montreal Metro is 59 years old. It first opened on October 14, 1966, under the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

For the milestone event, the STM will also sell a limited collection of 60th-anniversary merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps and bags, from September 23 to October 19.

Illustrated by La Charbonne, the items will be made in Quebec and / or Canada, with proceeds donated to Centraide of Greater Montreal to support organisations working with people experiencing homelessness, as well as Réchaud-bus, a food-support organisation serving young people in disadvantaged communities.

Under the theme “60 Years of Metro Moments,” the STM is also inviting the public to share their own metro moments, which will become part of a collective artwork to be unveiled on October 14.

A submission form is available on the STM’s website here.

As explained by Marie-Claude Léonard, CEO of the STM: “Metro moments are all the big and small stories that unfold every day on the metro. To celebrate this anniversary, the STM is joining forces with its many partners, who share our desire to showcase the metro and thank those who bring it to life: our passengers, our employees and the entire Montreal community. Together, we are offering activities that will create new metro moments while revisiting those that have marked people’s lives.”

Other highlights include a Radio-Canada documentary hosted by Pierre-Yves Lord, filmed over the past year at several STM facilities. “Pierre-Yves prend le métro” will air on Thursday, September 17 at 9pm on ICI TÉLÉ and ICI TOU.TV.

And a special edition of “Votre retour,” hosted by Monic Néron on ICI Première and Radio-Canada OHdio, will also be broadcast live from a metro station on October 14 at 3 p.m. to mark the anniversary.

The 60th-anniversary celebrations are being made possible through collaborations with a wide range of Montreal artists, cultural organisations, sports teams and institutions, including the Montreal Canadiens, CF Montréal, Montreal Alouettes, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Piknic Électronik, Radio-Canada, YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport and more.

According to a press release, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, the Mayor of Montreal, said: “Sixty years ago, Montreal made the ambitious choice to go underground to open up new possibilities above ground. The metro brought our neighbourhoods closer together, provided access to jobs, education, businesses and culture, and supported the economic development of our city. On August 24, city council will adopt a declaration in its honour to recognize this exceptional achievement and its contribution to Montreal’s development and influence over the past six decades. It is now up to us to carry this legacy to its next station by investing in its upkeep and continuing its expansion.”

What are the details of the Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension project?

The Montreal Metro Blue Line extension is a $7.6 billion infrastructure project led by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) to push the line 6 kilometers eastward from Saint-Michel station into the Anjou borough. The expected completion date is 2031.
