A new strike by 2,400 maintenance employees has once again been announced.
This follows two previous strike periods by the 2,400 STM maintenance employees: a 9-day strike in June and a second strike from September 22 to October 5, 2025.
When will the new STM strike begin?
The Syndicat du transport de Montréal–CSN has issued a strike notice beginning overnight from October 31 to November 1 and ending on November 28.

What is the current situation?
Details regarding bus and metro service during the strike will be shared on this page in the coming days.
How will the third strike affect Montreal commuters?
According to a report by the CBC, this new strike will directly impact the internal operations of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), as overtime work will be suspended, according to the union’s statement.
During this third round of strike action, commuters can expect service slowdowns and potential disruptions, though operations are expected to continue during peak hours.
The report also explains that the key sticking points in the negotiations include work schedules and the STM’s increasing use of subcontracting.

What are the next steps?
The report continues to explain that the union is required to submit a strike notice to the Tribunal administratif du travail at least seven working days before the strike begins.
This timeframe excludes the day the notice is received, the scheduled start date of the strike, and non-working days such as Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
According to the STM, discussions with the union have focused on the proposed level of essential services to be submitted to the labour tribunal.
This includes maintaining adapted services at all times, as well as ensuring maximum public transit availability on municipal election day, November 2.
The STM also stated that it will inform the public of potential service impacts once Quebec’s labour tribunal rules on the strike.
The tribunal is expected to decide whether the union’s proposed level of essential services adequately protects public health and safety.
What to do if there is no bus or metro service?
If the métro service has ended for the day, you can check the Trip Planner and untick the “Métro” option to see if there are any buses available for your route.
If a bus is not available, the STM encourages commuters to consider other transportation options such as Bixi, walking, Communauto, taxi, Uber, carpooling, or asking friends or family for help.
