It’s easy to eat well in Nashville. In the home of hot chicken, you can also find serious fine dining, seasonal farm-to-table restaurants, and traditional meat & three spots. Here are some of our favourites.

1. Rolf and Daughters

Taking nights out in Nashville to the next level, Rolf and Daughters is a community-focused neighbourhood joint offering a fusion of seasonal Italian and French flavours in a cosy setting. The craft cocktails make use of classic American whiskeys befitting the industrial brick warehouse vibe, while the family-style food features hyper-seasonal ingredients. However, trips here are not complete without a plate of their signature pasta, which is created as part of an in-house pasta program.

2. Butcher and Bee

A farm-to-table favourite, Butcher and Bee is an East Nashville staple. Here, provenance is king, and the Med-inspired menu might feature anything from mushroom shawarma with grilled Lion's Mane and shaved fennel, to braised short rib with black olive gremolata and hominy crumble. A class act.

3. Prince’s Hot Chicken

Everyone in Nashville will have a different answer when it comes to the best hot chicken in town, but we like to test out tastebuds at Prince’s. Credited with inventing the searingly spicy fried chicken – always served on a slice of white bread – Prince’s launched in 1945 (inspired by a thrilling tale of a woman scorned) and has been a city staple ever since. Dare to try the XXX Hot, and don’t forget to add on some pork-infused baked beans and cooling coleslaw to soothe your stomach after. A rite of Nashville passage – rumour has it that Bolton’s and Hattie B’s offer pretty good riffs on this iconic dish too.

4. Catbird Seat

If it’s good enough for Anthony Bourdain… The storied chef and writer experienced this constantly evolving spot when visiting Nashville in a memorable episode of his Parts Unknown travelogue. Now run by chefs Tiffani Ortiz and Andy Doubrava, expect creativity and sustainability to guide your tasting menu experience here. This isn’t just a meal, it’s an adventure.

5. Audrey

Acclaimed Southern-style chef Sean Brock is the mastermind behind Audrey – which is named after his maternal grandmother – a semi-new eatery (it opened in 2021) that celebrates the best of Appalachian cuisine. Taste the rural south in a menu that brims over with earthy conviviality. Feast on traditional dishes such as shrimp grits, sassafras smoked pork shoulder, pimento cheese and country ham.

6. Dino’s

Dino’s is a classic Nashville dive bar serving up some of the city’s best fast food. The cheeseburger is legendary, but fried chicken and grilled cheese sandwiches also hit the spot at a certain time of evening - and they’re open until 3am, in case you get a midnight craving. Don’t forget to visit the Dolly Parton lemonade stand in the yard, designed by local artist Brett Douglas Hunter.

7. Arnold’s Country Kitchen

Nashville dining doesn't get more trad than at Arnold’s. Home of the ‘meat and three’ – and only open for lunch service – this buffet-style spot will see your own personal platter loaded up with your choice of meat and three distinct, southern sides. Try everything from sugar-cured ham to chicken-fried steak or blackened salmon (though we’d recommend the carved roast beef which is the only thing served daily), with a selection of soul-food favourites, such as turnip greens, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and candied yams. Don’t forget a slice of pecan pie to finish. This is food to make your heart sing.
