Maafa is a Kiswahili word that means "great tragedy" or "horrific tragedy," referring to the period called the Middle Passage or Transatlantic Slave Trade. This commemoration honors our ancestors, known and unknown in a sacred ceremony in Congo Square. The one and only Dr. Sonia Sanchez will serve as the Maafa Grande griot. The event is free and open to the public.
