When you’re planning a holiday abroad, airport quality doesn’t usually factor into your choice of destination. But for some it really matters. And if you are the kind of person who digs their duty-free and departure lounges? You may well be familiar with the annual ranking by airline review site Skytrax, which has just revealed its latest list of the world’s best airports.

In at number one for the very first time is Hamad International Airport in Doha. With its art installations, squash courts and swimming pool, the emphasis is definitely on luxury. The service is even more extravagant for Qatar Airways passengers – as staff at the airport host city tours and a VIP transfer service. That definitely beats sprinting through the gates for a connecting flight.

Dropping to third place from number one is Singapore’s Changi. The airport – filled with lush, forest-like concourses and maximalist water features – has been overtaken by Tokyo’s Haneda airport, in second place. Also on the list is Tokyo Narita. Two amazing airports in one city? Unfair, if you ask us.

The list was voted on by the public, in what has been a very rocky year for the industry. According to Skytrax, the Covid safety precautions taken by the airports have been factored into the final decision, alongside amenities and general design.

Here is the top ten in full:

1. Hamad International Airport, Doha, Qatar

2. Tokyo Haneda, Japan

3. Singapore Changi Airport

4. Seoul Incheon, South Korea

5. Tokyo Narita, Japan

6. Munich Airport, Germany

7. Zurich Airport, Switzerland

8. London Heathrow Airport, UK

9. Kansai International Airport, Japan

10. Hong Kong International Airport

And these are the most beautiful airports in the world, ranked by us. What do you reckon?
