Hungry for Beef? The second season of the 2023 breakout miniseries is the highlight of April’s Netflix slate, as it’s apparently getting turned into an anthology with an unrelated story and a brand-new, pretty killer cast. A couple of other returns mark the month, including new seasons of the young-adult romance XO, Kitty, the Kate Hudson basketball comedy Running Point and the animated kid-flick spinoff The Bad Guys: The Series. Oh, and after four long months without them, your old demon-slaying pals from Hawkins, Indiana, are also back - as cartoons. Here are the other movies and shows we’re looking forward to streaming on Netflix this month.

The Bad Guys: The Series season 2
Ever wonder how the criminal animals in the Bad Guys franchise got their starts in the heist business? This animated prequel series is going to tell you. Several stars of the two films, including Chris Diamantopoulos and Michael Godere, reprise their voice roles for the show.

XO, Kitty season 3
Spinning off from the top-shelf teen romcom To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, this series is something like a young-adult take on Emily in Paris, following younger sister Kitty Song-Covey (Anna Cathcart) on a journey of self-discovery at the Korean boarding school her late mother once attended. If you’re already a fan, you’re already counting down the days to the premiere – and if you’re new, expect a lot of awkward situations and complex romantic feelings.

Big Mistakes
Dan Levy does The Righteous Gemstones? In his first series since Schitt’s Creek, Levy, who co-created the show with the ascendant Rachel Sennott, stars as a preacher who gets mixed up in organized crime, along with his sister (newcomer Taylor Ortega). All right, the Gemstones comparison probably sets it up for failure, but it looks like a fun comic romp.

Thrash
Have you ever seen that fake photo of a shark swimming down a flooded highway that goes viral whenever there’s a major weather event in a coastal region? Apparently, someone saw that and said, ‘Now there’s a movie!’ A Category 5 hurricane makes landfall, bringing a bunch of understandably aggrieved maneaters swarming into urban areas. Stupid? Oh yeah. Fun? Hopefully!

Beef season 2
Netflix’s breakout hit of 2023 gets the White Lotus treatment, with an all-new drama and a new cast of big names. Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny are employees at a country club who enter into a war of wills with their general manager and his wife, played by Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan.

A Gorilla Story: Told By David Attenborough
Something like a simian version of the Up series, David Attenborough – the voice of nature itself – reconnects with a wild gorilla he first met as a young primate, now leading a family unit of its own.

Roommates
Adam Sandler has made a habit of casting his own family in his movies, but in the case of this campus comedy, it’s his eldest daughter, Sadie, taking the lead, relegating dad to cameo status. Devon (Sandler) is a geeky college freshman who forms a passive-aggressive frenemyship with her hot-girl dormmate Celeste (Chloe East). The strong supporting cast includes Nick Kroll, Natasha Lyonne and Saturday Night Live’s Sarah Sherman and Martin Herlihy.

Funny AF with Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart travels the country to crown the next big name in standup comedy. A live finale happens in May.

Unchosen
The Handmaid’s Tale ended last year, but the real world hasn’t stopped resembling it – and so, here comes a similar story of female subjugation, in which a woman struggles to emancipate herself from a repressive religious cult. Molly Windsor, Sex Education’s Asa Butterfield and Fra Free star.

This Is a Gardening Show
If you wanted to be mean, there are plenty of rude jokes to be made about Zach Galifianakis suddenly showing interest in fruits and vegetables. In this series, the comedian investigates the agrarian lifestyle by interviewing experts and goofing around with farm kids. Call it Between Two Corn Stalks.

Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85
How much blood can Netflix continue to squeeze from a superpowered teenager’s nose? Four months after Stranger Things’ polarising ending, the Hawkins Hellfire Club is back, in animated form, with no original cast members, a non-canon adventure set between the second and third seasons, and a brand new character voiced by Odessa A’zion. It’s said to be in the spirit of classic Saturday morning cartoons a la The Real Ghostbusters, which is promising.

Running Point season 2
Fresh off her surprise Oscar nomination, Kate Hudson reprises the role of Isla Gordon, a party girl turned girl boss running a fictional – but extremely Los Angeles Lakers-coded – professional basketball team, in this Mindy Kaling-created comedy. In this season, Gordon’s screw-up brother (Justin Theroux) returns to the family business, complicating an already difficult championship push.

Haven’t had your fill of human-on-human sport hunting in movies yet? Good, because here comes the third such movie in a little over a month. Charlize Theron, still in her Streaming Action Star Era, is a widow hoping to exorcise her grief in the Australian wilderness who ends up pursued by a bow-and-arrow-wielding psychopath (Taron Egerton) – or what the Aussies call ‘a fun weekend getaway’.

Man on Fire
Adapted from the same 1980 AJ Quinnell novel as the not-great 2004 Denzel Washington movie, this action-thriller series stars Marvel alum Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a traumatised mercenary out to avenge his partner’s slaying and protect the latter’s daughter from meeting her father’s fate. Scoot McNairy and Bobby Cannavale are also in the cast.
