It’s the dog days of summer, and Netflix is certainly dogging it. With awards season still a month or two away, the streamer is keeping its best stuff locked tight for now. That said, it doesn’t mean the platform’s August drops are all dross. There’s the second part of the criminally underseen adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s epic novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, the final season of cult favorite action melodrama Outer Banks and a new anime that looks nuts. Meanwhile, there’s the return of the Shane Gillis sitcom Tires, Ricky Gervais as a snarky animated cat, Wagner Moura and Greta Lee trapped in a house and Robert De Niro as Adam Scott’s dad in a depressing-looking thriller. Your mileage may vary on those, but for some, it’s exactly the kind of content you’re paying a monthly subscription for.

Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy
In case you missed it, fast food is bad for you. In this doc, British comedian Mo Gilligan reheats Super Size Me’s 22-year-old leftovers, embarking on a journey to consume nothing but fried chicken for 28 days. What will he learn? And how will he feel? ‘Bad’ about covers it, we think.

One-Hundred Years of Solitude part 2
Last year, Netflix did the seemingly impossible, adapting Gabriel García Márquez’s 60-year-old literary masterwork to the screen for the first time ever. Pity they barely promoted it, and thus no one watched. Hopefully they give this second part an actual push, because directors Alex García López and Laura Mora did an impressive job of interpreting Márquez’s magical-realist vision.

My Life with the Walter Boys season 3
Call it Dawson’s Ranch – or maybe Yellowstone Babies. After losing her parents in a car accident, a teenager from New York is taken in by a family in rural Colorado consisting of seven hunky sons (and one daughter). In the third season, the drama heats up following last season’s confessions of love and medical-emergency cliffhanger.

Alley Cats
Netflix has been tossing out new adult animation series seemingly in search of a replacement for Big Mouth, with little luck so far. Will Ricky Gervais as a surly stray cat work? Maybe don’t put too much money on it. Then again, whatever you think of Gervais as a comic or general public figure, he has a pretty solid track record of TV shows. So who knows?

The Last House
A suburban family wakes up one morning to find themselves trapped inside their house by a mysterious, unseen force. (Is its name Dr. Fauci?) Sounds like a case of too-much-concept, but the mother and father are played by The Secret Agent’s Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, which gives some hope it’ll turn out better than it looks… just don’t look at the rest of director Louis Leterrier’s filmography.

The Ribbon Hero
Netflix continues to corner the non-Crunchyroll market on outstanding anime films with this adaptation of the midcentury manga series Princess Knight. Sapphire, the princess of the once-prosperous Silverland, must take up her sword to defend her adopted homeland from the same beast that destroyed her people.

Tires season 3
Getting kicked off Saturday Night Live is the best thing that could have happened to comedian Shane Gillis, as the manosphere favourite now has a higher profile than most current cast members, and his own show to boot. Set in an auto garage, this workplace comedy breaks no new ground, but it’s proven popular enough to last for three seasons.

Don't Say Good Luck
It’s the year of the Sandler sisters! Following Sadie Sandler’s well-received turn in Chandler Levack’s Roommates, younger sibling Sunny takes the spotlight in this weepier-looking teen dramedy. She’s a high-schooler preparing for a starring role in her school’s production of Waitress when her mother’s cancer returns. Melanie Lynskey and Max Greenfield play her parents, with Steve Buscemi as her grandpa. Works for us.

Outer Banks season 5
One of those shows with a big following where you’re either part of the cult or have no idea it even exists, this teen action melodrama wraps up, as the warring factions on Kildare Island close in on the hidden gold that’s caused all sorts of trouble for five long seasons. But then, if you’re reading this, you probably already know that.

Leanne season 2
Chuck Lorre, master of the normie sitcom, teams with comedian Leanne Morgan for this CBS-coded multi-camera series about a woman on the edge of 60 forced back into the dating pool after her husband of three decades ditches her for someone younger. Country star Lainey Wilson, Jaime Pressly and Tyne Daly drop by for season 2.

The Whisper Man
Robert De Niro cashes another fat Ted Sarandos check, and this time, he’s taking Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan to the bank with him. In this sub-Fincherian thriller, De Niro is an ex-cop whose estranged son (Scott) asks him for help tracking the sadistic killer he believes abducted his child. Monaghan is a police detective, and Michael Keaton is in it, too. Is he the Whisper Man? He can be quite breathy at times.
