Will Ferrell swings, Kevin Hart parties and 'Heartstopper' stops

Are you ready to laugh? Maybe? Netflix’s two biggest new titles for July feature two of the biggest names in comedy: Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell. In The Hawk, Ferrell plays a washed-up golfer mounting a comeback, while in 72 Hours, Hart is a washed-up party animal trying to prove he’s still got something left in the tank by hanging with a trio of current Saturday Night Live cast members during a wild bachelor party weekend. Elsewhere, Millie Bobby Brown returns to the role of Enola ‘Sister of Sherlock’ Holmes for a third go-round, the tender queer romcom Heartstopper comes to a tearful end and beloved rural drama Little House on the Prairie gets a 21st century makeover.

Millie Bobby Brown continues her adventures as the plucky younger sister of Sherlock Holmes. In this third instalment of the series, she’s on her way to Malta to marry handsome dweeb Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), only to have her nuptials interrupted by news that her famous detective brother has been kidnapped.
Premieres July 1
Siphoning off the success of HBO’s Neighbors, this docuseries, from the creators of Worst Roommate Ever, recounts four tales of neighborly conflict that went too far. How far? A house explodes at one point.
Premieres July 1
A gassy villain terrorises the world in this remake of the 1960s Japanese cult classic sci-fi film – or maybe ‘gaseous’ is the more appropriate adjective. A man discovers he has the ability to transform into an undetectable vapor, a power he puts to criminal use. Written by Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, the limited series features visual effects from the team behind the awe-inspiring Godzilla Minus One – two very positive signs.
Premieres July 2
The endearing journey of Mavis Beaumont comes to an end with an Emily in Paris-type final season, as the aspiring plus-sized fashionista is given the opportunity of a lifetime in the City of Lights – while also navigating a complicated love triangle.
Premieres July 2
In an era overflowing with rural dramas, the time is right for yet another adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book series. In the late 1800s, the Ingalls family leaves Wisconsin to settle in Kansas, confronting myriad troubles along the way.
Premieres July 9
If you’re a high-level professional athlete these days, a camera crew is probably following you, even when you’re not at work. As the title makes clear, this docuseries keeps tabs on three NFL quarterbacks through the course of football season: Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders, Cam Ward of the Tennessee Titans and Joe Flacco of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Premieres July 14
Will Ferrell is funny in everything, but his sports comedies have some of the lowest rates of return (see: Semi-Pro, Kicking and Screaming). He’ll try again with this series, in which he plays a disgraced golf pro screaming his way to a comeback that puts him on a collision course with his ascendant nepo-baby son (Jimmy Tatro). Maybe one day someone will make a movie about a golfer who’s not a loud asshole, but today is not that day.
Premieres July 16
Alice Oseman’s tender and uplifting teen love story Heartstopper won raves for its queer themes and sensitive handling of big issues including adolescent sex and mental health. In lieu of a final season, this feature-length finale wraps things up for Nick and Charlie (Kit Connor and Joe Locke) as they stand at the precipice of life beyond high school.
Premieres July 17
Apologies if this sounds condescending, but the easiest way to describe this rural romance is ‘Yellowstone for Women.’ Minka Kelly is a New York concert pianist who returns to her small Texas town to take over a local dancehall and falls for a rancher with a tragic past (Josh Duhamel). Can love blossom amid familial land battles, encroachment from outsiders and buried secrets coming to light? It’s been rocky so far!
Premieres July 23
Kevin Hart does The Hangover, basically, as an unc-in-denial trying to prove he can hang with the young’uns when he joins a group of zoomers on a debauched bachelor party weekend. Sounds mid at best, but it’s another reminder of the raunchy, loud-and-dumb comedies that used to proliferate in cinemas before becoming exclusively forgettable streaming fodder.
