November marks the end of an era on Netflix. In a jam-packed month, the biggest event of the calendar is the beginning of the end for arguably the platform’s most well-known cultural commodity, Stranger Things, which drops the first batch of its final eight episodes on the eve of Thanksgiving in America. But that’s far from the only highlight. After a brief theatrical run, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein finally hits the streamer, along with two other films that could make some noise during awards season: the logger drama Train Dreams and Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague. There are also documentaries about Eddie Murphy and Selena, the second seasons of two under-the-radar comedy gems, some standout animations, a coming-of-age drama co-written by Anora’s Sean Baker, and Michael Shannon as President James Garfield.

Death By Lightning
A cadre of impressively bearded actors, including Michael Shannon, Matthew Macfadyen and Nick Offerman, come together to dramatise one of the less-discussed political assassinations in American history, that of President James Garfield in 1881. Honestly, they had us at ‘Michael Shannon as James Garfield’ and ‘Nick Offerman with mutton chops’.
Premieres November 6
The Bad Guys: Breaking In
Ever wonder how the criminal animals in the Bad Guys franchise got their starts in the heist business? No? Well, maybe your kids have. In either case, this animated prequel series is going to tell you. Several stars of the two films, including Chris Diamantopoulos and Michael Godere, reprise their voice roles for the show.
Premiere November 6
The Vince Staples Show season 2
Rapper Vince Staples ably filled the void left behind by the end of Atlanta with the first season of his self-titled comedy series, a surreal and street-smart look at the challenges of being young, Black and famous. In the second season, a death in the family further complicates life for Staples’ barely-fictionalised avatar – and from the trailer apparently leads to him blasting a shotgun out the window of a moving car.
Premieres November 6
Frankenstein
Like Robert Eggers and Nosferatu, remaking James Whale’s foundational monster movie is Guillermo del Toro’s childhood dream project, so you know he put his back into this one, and based on the trailer, it shows. Oscar Isaac plays the doctor, while Jacob Elordi is his abominable creation.
Premieres November 7
Being Eddie
Few comedians have ever reached the meteoric heights Eddie Murphy achieved in the 1980s, nor made as many baffling professional decisions on the way back down. Somewhat reclusive, the actor opens the door to his ginormous estate for this career-spanning documentary. It looks baldly hagiographic, so it remains to be seen how much depth is given to the more controversial (and sometimes embarrassing) parts of his life and work.
Premieres November 12
The Beast In Me
Claire Danes reunites with Homeland showrunner Howard Gordon in this limited series. She plays a successful author grieving the loss of her son who rediscovers her muse in the form of a real-estate mogul (and onetime high-profile murder suspect) who moves in next door. Of course, her fascination eventually grows dangerous.
Premieres November 13
In Your Dreams
In this animated adventure, two siblings are transported to the land of dreams, where they embark on a journey to meet the all-powerful Sandman in hopes of saving their parents’ fracturing marriage. If that sounds quite Pixarish, writer-director Alex Woo worked on classics including Ratatouille and WALL-E, and he’s issuing this film as the debut of his own studio, Kuku. Craig Robinson, Simu Liu and Cristin Milioti lend their voices.
Premieres November 14
Nouvelle Vague
Richard Linklater has two historically-informed films coming out within weeks of each other, the first being the Rodgers and Hart chamber drama Blue Moon. More intriguing for cinephiles is his dramatisation of the production of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 game-changer Breathless. Is there much fresh insight to be drawn from one of the most pored-over films of all-time? Remains to be seen, but Linklater’s film seems to replicate the freewheeling energy of the French New Wave classic it’s based on.
Premieres November 14
Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy
The tragedy of crossover Tejano star Selena Quintanilla’s death is well-trod. Refreshingly, this documentary instead focuses on her life, music and the familial bonds that informed both, using never-before-seen home video and archival footage and interviews with her sister, brother and former bandmates.
Premieres November 17
A Man on the Inside season 2
Television, in whatever form it takes, just can’t go long without Ted Danson. He returns for the second season of this smart, pleasant comedy – created by sitcom wunderkind Mike Schur of The Office and Parks and Rec fame – as a retired professor and widower who stumbles into a second career as a private investigator.
Premieres November 20
Train Dreams
Of all the awards hopefuls Netflix is trotting out, this gorgeously shot early 20th century period piece might be the best – and most low-key. Highly touted out of Sundance, it stars Joel Edgerton as a logger watching his way of life fade as the modern world comes into view. Adapted from the 2011 novella by Denis Johnson by Sing Sing co-writers Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley and directed by the latter, it looks like a dark horse Best Picture contender.
Premieres November 21
Stranger Things season 5 volume 1
After five seasons and nine real-time years, Netflix’s first true monocultural phenomenon is finally coming to an end, presumably with one final battle against the forces of the Upside Down. Don’t cry for the young demon-slayers of Hawkins, Indiana, quite yet, though: this is the first of three episode drops spread between now and the end of the year, with each instalment averaging 90 minutes. So you’ve still got some time to say goodbye.
Premieres November 26
Left-Handed Girl
Anora’s Sean Baker co-wrote this lovely-looking family drama and coming-of-age story with director Shih-Ching Tsou, his collaborator on 2004’s Take Out. It focuses on a single mother and her two daughters, who relocate from rural Taiwan to Taipei to open a restaurant in a bustling night market. Shot entirely on an iPhone a la Baker’s 2015 breakthrough Tangerine, it looks to have an up-close intimacy, with a warm and human centre.
