An MMA dream fight, Michael B Jordan’s first post-Sinners project and Alfred Molina as a literal octopus

Fights, roasts and Alfred Molina highlight Netflix’s May slate. If you’re a fan of MMA, or just sports trainwrecks in general, by far the month’s biggest event is the live match pitting two of the most decorated (and problematic) women fighters of all-time, Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, against each other for the first time. If you’re pretty much the exact opposite of an MMA fan, you’re probably most looking forward to the return of the Tina Fey-Steve Carell comedy series The Four Seasons – or perhaps the movie where Sally Field befriends an octopus whose internal monologue is narrated by Alfred Molina. Elsewhere, Kevin Hart gets roasted, Martin Shorts gets a documentary, Michael B Jordan turns into a forest critter and the Stranger Things creators return with a show about a group of senior paranormal investigators led by – who else? – Alfred Molina.

In a quirk of scheduling, Michael B Jordan’s first role after his big Oscar win is voicing a small woodland creature who swaps bodies with the winged predator who’s constantly trying to eat him. Can’t win ‘em all, I guess, although casting Tracy Morgan to essentially play Tracy Jordan as a fish has some promise.

After years of movies like The Hunger Games and Battle Royale iterating on its concept, the original ‘kids on an island submitting to their primal instincts’ story gets the limited series treatment via Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne. Hope that chubby kid with the glasses gets out OK!

Steve Coogan gets scowly in this crime drama series about untrained bureaucrats going undercover to infiltrate the UK’s most dangerous drug cartels. Apparently it’s based on a true story.

In this adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s 2022 bestseller, Sally Field is the recently widowed caretaker of a local aquarium who finds new purpose in her friendship with both a young man searching for his estranged father (Lewis Pullman) and an octopus named Marcellus. Also: the octopus narrates via the voice of Doc Ock himself, Alfred Molina. (Typecast much?) Your grandma will love it.
Premieres May 8
Omnipresent multimillionaire comic Kevin Hart finally gets cut down to size — although by the looks of him, God already did that a long time ago. Boom, pre-roasted!
Premieres May 10
Martin Short gets the hagiography he deserves in a career-spanning documentary from director Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill). Anything that gets Jiminy Glick back on television is a worthy endeavor.

In yet further proof that Michael Mann’s Heat is just its own genre now, this series, from Power co-creator Courtney A Kemp, involves a cop’s (Matthew Law) obsessive pursuit of the criminal who killed his partner (Y’lan Noel), who has everyone else convinced he’s gone straight.

In a small Ohio town in 2022, a car travelling 100 mph slammed into a brick building, killing two of the three teenagers inside. Was it a terrible accident or premeditated murder? The latest entry to Netflix’s true-crime canon investigates.

It’s the battle of the problematic MMA legends! Ronda ‘The Sandy Hook Truther’ Rousey versus Gina ‘All-Around MAGA Chud’ Carano! Neither has been in the octagon for a long time, but for fans, this is a legit dream match between the two most famous female fighters ever.

Old folks team up to confront a sinister entity lurking within a seemingly idyllic retirement community. So it’s like Cocoon, but evil? Or is it Stranger Things: The Senior Years? (It is executive produced by the Duffer brothers.) Alfred Molina, fresh off voicing the internal monologue of an octopus, leads a stacked cast that also includes Bill Pullman, Geena Davis and Alfre Woodard.

Remember when Sacha Baron Cohen was a comedic master of disguise with the potential to win an Oscar one day? Now he’s starring in this romcom fantasy as a chauvinistic CEO who’s transported to an alternate timeline where women are dominant and men are the oppressed gender. Who needs to fire their agent more: Cohen or co-star Rosamund Pike?
Premieres May 22
Hurray for more Ted Sarandos-funded vacations! Tina Fey created this series, based on the 1980s Alan Arkin comedy, about a group of friends working through various midlife crises while on their quarterly getaways together. Lucky for Fey and co-stars Steve Carell, Colman Domingo and Will Forte, the first season was popular enough to warrant a second. About time those guys got to go somewhere nice.
