Every year, we ask tens of thousands of reader about the best places to hang out in their city. We want to know where the most amazing food is, where the buzziest bars and nightlife are – and this year more than ever, where community really matters.

The result is our annual ranking of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods. This year, the public vote – based on the responses from our Time Out Index survey – was supplemented by the opinions of Time Out editors and contributors around the world. Our panel of experts then sat down to rank the lot.

It’s a mixture of the thrilling metropolises you’d expect – Berlin, New York, London – plus smaller cities like Accra, Tbilisi and Oaxaca. Oh, and there’s a neighbourhood in Dublin on the list, too.

Our Dublin expert wrote that ‘Dublin 8 captures the essence and charm of the Irish capital to a tee’. Over the past year, the area has seen a wealth of positive changes: Lucky’s pub has been transformed into a cultural hotspot with excellent rotating exhibitions, while Pearse Lyons has reintroduced tours of its church distillery.

Green spaces like the War Memorial Gardens or Phoenix Park mean you can twin a day vintage shopping with something more outdoorsy – or you can head straight to MVP for a pint.

Sounds like a pretty dreamy part of the city, right? If you’re local, you may well have discovered the joys of Dublin 8 already. But for everyone else: add it to your bucket list ASAP.

Want to find out whether your area made the cut? Here’s our full ranking of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.
