It’s a very big year for Doctor Who. Jodie Whittaker’s four-year stint as the Doctor comes to an end in October, with Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa taking over as the fourteenth Doctor. And Whovian legends David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be back for a special 60th anniversary episode, too.

There’s also a special Doctor Who documentary, Doctor Who Am I, in cinemas in October and an exhibition touring the country.

It’s a lot to be getting on with, although who could resist the idea of a Star Wars/Doctor Who crossover akin to the one John Boyega just floated in an interview.

Chatting to Radio Times about diversity in TV and film, and referring to the casting of the Rwanda-born Gatwa, Boyega shared his enthusiasm for the casting.

‘It is opening up. You get inspired by things like Ncuti Gatwa playing the Doctor in Doctor Who – that is special to me. The glass ceiling can’t limit us. It’s exciting to see what comes out of this new stage of filmmaking and entertainment.’

Would he be up for a role in the show? ‘I would love that!’ he said. ‘But get me in an episode where I’m one of the many Doctors in many timelines so I can just cameo it.’

Even may be a pipe dream, but it’s one to have sci-fi fans dreaming. And who knows, maybe Russell T Davies can work some timey-wimey magic with Boyega’s hectic schedule.

In the much shorter term, the Londoner is starring in knotty heist thriller Breaking. It hits UK streaming sites on March 27 and is on PVOD in the US now.

5 reasons why 2023 will be the biggest in Doctor Who’s history.
