1. Sirât (Hulu)

A scorching-hot journey into the sunburned heart of darkness, Spanish director Oliver Laxe’s bleak thriller is like Mad Max: Fury Road slowed to the pace of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer. A father (Sergi López, the movie’s only professional actor), along with his young son and dog, travels to an outdoor rave in Morocco in search of his missing daughter, then ends up going deeper into the desert than he bargained for. It’s one of the standouts of the year so far. Read Time Out’s review.

2. Christy (HBO Max)

Sydney Sweeney made a long-shot Oscar play by bulking up to portray boxer Christy Martin in this rather standard-issue sports biopic. It didn’t work out, but Sweeney does acquit herself well as Martin, imbuing her with toughness and vulnerability as her fame grows between the ropes while her home life with her manager-husband grows abusive – and nearly deadly. 3. Outcome (Apple TV)

Jonah Hill follows up his warmly nostalgic directorial debut Mid90s with a cancellation comedy that probably hits quite close to home. Keanu Reeves stars as a once self-destructive actor who’s just beginning to rebuild his career when he’s blackmailed by a video catching him in some bad behavior. Despite having a cast that also includes Cameron Diaz, Martin Scorsese, Drew Barrymore and Hill himself, plus a score from Jon Brion, the early reviews haven’t been great – but Hill gets another shot with another comedy, Cut Off, coming later this year.

4. The Plague (AMC+)

A mix of coming-of-age drama, psychological thriller and body horror, The Plague was the talk of last year’s Cannes. A socially awkward teenager, desperate to fit in, becomes entwined in the hierarchy of water polo camp, where he joins in tormenting another kid even lower on the totem pole. It’s an unnerving slow-burn that’ll leave you shellshocked.

5. Thrash (Netflix)

Have you ever seen that fake photo of a shark swimming down a flooded highway that goes viral whenever there’s a major weather event in a coastal region? Well, someone apparently saw that and said, ‘Now there’s a movie!’ (Nevermind that’s already the movie Crawl, only with alligators instead of murderous fish.) A Category 5 hurricane makes landfall, bringing a bunch of understandably aggrieved maneaters swarming into urban areas. Stupid? Oh yeah. Fun? Hopefully!
