1. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)
The first Knives Out was a charming anachronism that became a major leftfield hit, while the sequel attempted to modernise its murder-mystery formula, to less success. The third film looks to get back to basics somewhat, this time involving the death of a priest. Once again, the cast is stacked: you’ve got Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Kerry Washington and the suddenly ubiquitous Josh O’Connor, just to name a few. Most importantly, Daniel Craig is back as super-sleuth Benoit Blanc, and luckily, his Southern accent hasn’t gotten any more believable. Read Time Out’s review.

2. F1: The Movie (Apple TV)
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski trades zoom for vroom in his most recent blockbuster, which stars Brad Pitt as a retired Formula One racing legend who’s called back to the track to mentor a talented young driver and reclaim his former glory. Sound familiar? Sure. But anyone who enjoyed his last movie’s dudes-rock energy (read: everyone) isn’t going to complain, especially with racing scenes this exhilarating. Read Time Out’s review.

3. The Mastermind (MUBI)
It was a big year at the movies for bumbling white men, and no one bumbled harder than Josh O’Connor in director Kelly Reichardt’s sedate crime comedy. O’Connor is a quietly smarmy suburban dad in 1970s Massachusetts who decides to break bad by orchestrating a broad-daylight art heist – a scheme that goes as badly as it could go. Reichardt’s unhurried pacing will make less patient viewers antsy, but the period details, jazzy soundtrack and throwback filmmaking aesthetic are cool as chrome. Read Time Out’s review.

4. Predators (Paramount+)
No, not those Predators. Surely you remember To Catch a Predator, the docuseries that entrapped hundreds of would-be sex criminals and made a meme of host Chris Hansen. Some praised its vigilante sense of justice, but it left behind a complicated legacy, which filmmaker David Osit explores in gripping fashion in one of the most talked-about documentaries of the year.

5. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (HBO Max)
Well, it’s no The Naked Gun reboot, but the long-awaited sequel to the greatest comedy movie of all-time still produces the nostalgic thrill of seeing Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls reunited on both screen and stage again. Yes, it suffers from too many celebrity cameos, uninspired call-backs and a misreading of what made the first film an unimpeachable classic.
