1. Disclosure Day (Peacock)

A Steven Spielberg movie about aliens? How could that go wrong? Despite the familiar terrain, the master popcornographer’s return to sci-fi divided critics and audiences alike. Some saw it as a pure expression of the director’s longtime pet interests, others as cringe boomer hopium. In truth, it’s best watched as a high-craft chase movie, with Josh O’Connor and a dynamite Emily Blunt as strangers caught in a government conspiracy. 2. Hokum (Hulu)

Irish filmmaker Damian Mc Carthy broke through in 2024 with Oddity, a taut supernatural revenge story with a folk-horror atmosphere. He landed a big-name star for his followup in Adam Scott, playing an author who travels to West Cork to spread his parents’ ashes and finds himself ensconced in some eerie happenings. It’s less successful than its predecessor but still contains much pure-grade nightmare fuel. That mask that looks like a hybrid of late-stage Michael Jackson and a rabbit? Get out of here! 3. Oasis: Don't Look Back in Anger (Disney+)

It’s amazing what a well-timed band reunion can do. After years apart, the Gallagher brothers patched things up – or more likely, punched their issues out – for a massive stadium tour that instantly made the world the last few middling Oasis albums. This doc tracks what ended up a surprisingly emotional global victory lap, featuring the first tandem interview with Noel and Liam in more than a decade, which might be even more entertaining than the songs. 4. Matchbox: The Movie (Apple TV)

On the one hand, it’s a streaming movie based on a Mattel toy. On the other hand, the last time someone made a movie adapted from a famous toy, it got nominated for an Oscar. That’s not to say that this action-comedy, inspired by the ubiquitous die-cast car brand, will get anywhere near a statuette, but there are a couple reasons to be cautiously optimistic. It stars John Cena, who’s good at these sorts of things. And it co-stars Sam Richardson, who’s a welcome presence in everything. And… that’s sort of it. But hey, it’s not nothing.

5. V.H.S. Mixtape (Shudder)

A new installment of the VHS horror anthology franchise now arrives every Halloween like the Great Pumpkin bearing hit-or-miss short films from directors both recognizable and emerging. As the subtitle hints at, this year’s entry is themed around music, or at least sound – a concept that extends to the filmmakers themselves. Flying Lotus, Wu Tang Clan’s RZA and Ghost frontman Tobis Forge, making his directorial debut, all contribute to the mayhem.
