Whatever you think of Wicked, the beloved musical best described as The Wizard of Oz: The College Years, the first half of the two-part film adaptation was a bona fide phenomenon. Clearly, though, the decision to spread the story out to roughly double the length of the stage version was a miscalculation. Yeah, the second part made a lot of money, but it basically came and went from cultural consciousness. Still, the fans of the franchise are legion, so expect a bit of boost to the sequel’s profile now that it’s streaming more widely. Read Time Out’s review here.

Four years after the conclusion of Stephen Knight’s obsessed-over period crime saga, Cillian Murphy is popping his scally cap back on as ice-cold gangster Tommy Shelby for a feature-length epilogue. Set during World War II, several of the series’ key players are returning, including Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle and Ned Dennehy, with new additions Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth filling out a starry cast. Watch Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man now on Netflix
Bradley Cooper returns to the director’s chair for a portrait of midlife crisis that doesn’t manifest in the purchase of a new sportscar or a fresh ear-piercing but something almost equally embarrassing: amateur stand-up comedy. Will Arnett is a newly divorced father of two who ends up haunting open mics and processing the disorientation of his life by joking about it onstage. Arnett co-wrote the script with Cooper and Mark Chappell, and while it missed out on awards season, it’s the sort of adult-oriented dramedy that’s all too rare these days. Watch Is This Thing On? now on Hulu
In this vision of near-future justice, Chris Pratt is a cop accused of murdering his wife, who’s strapped to a chair and has 90 minutes to convincingly argue his innocence before an AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson), or face immediate execution. One of 2026’s early laughing stocks on par with last year’s also screen-trapped War of the Worlds, it might find a broader audience as a stoned late-night irony watch… or, y’know, not.
Acclaimed playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz makes her directorial debut with an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s 2016 novel. A daughter (Sex Education and Ella McCay’s Emma Mackey) and mother (the great Fiona Shaw) travel to the Spanish coast during an oppressively hot summer in search of a miracle cure for the latter’s illness, only to find their relationship fraying under the blistering sun. Expect emotions to be wrenched. Read Time Out’s review here.
