1. The Mandalorian and Grogu (Disney+)
Seven years after Rise of the Skywalker left a bad taste in fans’ mouths, along comes another Star Wars movie that’s not making anyone except 9-year-olds too happy. In this case, at least it’s pretty low-stakes. Spinning off from the canceled Disney+ series The Mandalorian, it continues the adventures of Pedro Pascal’s behelmeted bounty hunter and the tiny green guy formerly known as Baby Yoda. It feels like four episodes of the TV show stapled together, but that lil’ wrinkly Muppet is still hard to resist. Read Time Out’s review.

2. Romería (Criterion Channel)
Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron received more attention, but the third feature from Spanish filmmaker Carla Simón is an equally moving, semi-autobiographical exploration of memory and family – and it has a dance sequence in a punk club full of ghosts. An aspiring filmmaker left orphaned at a young age reconnects with her father’s family in a European port town, where she learns more about her parents than she bargained for. It’s mostly a quiet, observational film, but the third-act’s tilt into magical realism makes for an impactful capstone. Read Time Out’s review.

3. Scary Movie (Paramount+)
Horror movies: ever heard of ’em? The Wayans brothers have, and after a 13-year layoff, they’re back to lampoon them all. It would seem like society has moved past the need for genre-specific spoofs, let alone a sixth freakin’ Scary Movie movie, but apparently there’s still an audience out there for this stuff. Where else are we going to get the ‘Short Legs’ parody we’ve all been craving, anyway? Read Time Out’s review.

4. Erupcja (MUBI)
If Charli xcx isn’t doing the soundtrack for a movie this year, she’s appearing in it. In director Pete Ohs’ low-key indie drama, the Queen of Letterboxd plays a British woman vacationing with her fawning boyfriend in her old stomping grounds of Warsaw. When a volcano erupts in Italy, grounding flights, it leaves her with enough time to reconnect with an old flame and turn her life into its own form of natural disaster. Quietly engrossing, it’s the singer-turned-actress’ most impressive screen turn yet. Read Time Out’s review.
5. The President's Cake (Netflix)
A young girl is forced to bake a birthday cake for a school assignment. That doesn’t sound particularly thrilling, but the logline takes on a different dimension when the setting is rural Iraq in the early 1990s, and the dessert is meant as an offering of tribute to Saddam Hussein. Writer-director Hasan Hadi spins a devastating story from simple ingredients, sharply illustrating the destructive impact of despotism and geopolitical conflict on common people.
