🏆 The best movies of 2025 so far
🆕 What’s new on Netflix in October 2025
1. Sorry, Baby (HBO Max)
Writer, actor and Twitter celeb Eva Victor makes an assured directorial debut while covering some tough subject matter in this dramedy, following a college professor (Victor) in the long process of recovering from a sexual assault. Sound dour? Not so – Victor imbues the film with gentle humour and deep wells of empathy. It’s one of the year’s best movies, and among its greatest cinematic surprises. Read our review.
Watch Sorry, Baby on HBO Max starting October 30
2. Jurassic World Rebirth (Peacock)
Look, no sequel is going to rebottle the magic of the first Jurassic Park. After you’ve seen dinosaurs interact with humans once, each successive time out is going to get exponentially less awe-inspiring. But this most recent cast reset, swapping in Scarlett Johannson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, is an instant upgrade of the three preceding films – and if you squint, you can catch a small glimmer of the excitement of the Spielberg original. Read our review.
Watch Jurassic World Rebirth on Peacock starting October 30
3. Ballad of a Small Player (Netflix)
Director Edward Berger’s followup to last year’s deliciously catty papal drama Conclave tracks a down-and-out gambler (Colin Farrell) hiding out amongst the neon lights of Macau as he desperately tries to claw his way out of serious debt. Reviews so far have been mid, but Farrell is one of the most compulsively watchable actors out there and, like all of Berger’s films, it should be nice to look at.
Watch Ballad of a Small Player on Netflix starting October 29
4. Hedda (Prime)
On the road to next year’s blockbuster 28 Years Later sequel, director Nia DaCosta takes a detour to adapt Henrik Ibsen’s classic 1890 play. A luminescent Tessa Thompson steps into the role of Hedda Gabler, the daughter of a general forced into a loveless marriage whose repressed desires explode to the surface over the course of one eventful night. Read our review.
Watch Hedda on Prime starting October 29
5. The Cut (Paramount+)
Orlando Bloom plays against his pretty-boy image in this psychological sports thriller, dropping 35 pounds to play a retired boxer desperately trying to shed weight in a short time in an attempt at a comeback, with John Turturro as the trainer pushing him to his limits. It looks something like a pugilist version of Whiplash, which is certainly intriguing.
Watch The Cut on Paramount+ starting November 1
