1. Magellan (Criterion Channel)

A visually ravishing deconstruction of the myths surrounding Ferdinand Magellan, director Lav Diaz portrays the Portuguese explorer’s expedition to Southeast Asia as a colonialist mission in starkly brutal terms. At nearly three hours, it’s a slow-moving journey into the dark heart of history that’ll test the patience of some viewers, but it’s a rewarding corrective to the prevailing narrative of Magellan’s life – and filled with stunning images at nearly every turn.

2. Shelby Oaks (Hulu/Disney+)

YouTuber Chris Stuckmann graduates from film critic to filmmaker with this eerie supernatural horror that splices together found-footage and traditional narrative into an atmospheric chiller involving a paranormal investigator who goes looking for her missing sister in a midwestern ghost town. It only half succeeds, but Stuckmann proves that he knows his stuff, and the parts that work show a talent that’ll hopefully cohere in the future.

3. Dust Bunny (HBO Max)

A young girl hires a hitman to assassinate the monster who lives under her bed and who she believes ate her family. How’s that for a premise? Director Bryan Fuller turns it into a rollicking, imaginative first feature, with Mads Mikkelsen as the contract killer along with David Dastmalchian, Sigourney Weaver and impressive newcomer Sophie Sloan. Overlooked in theaters, it deserves to find a wider audience on streaming.

4. Roommates (Netflix)

Adam Sandler has made a habit of casting his own family in his movies, but in the case of this campus comedy, it’s his eldest daughter, Sadie, taking the lead, relegating dad to cameo status. Devon (Sandler) is a geeky college freshman who forms a passive-aggressive frenemyship with her hot-girl dormmate Celeste (Chloe East). The strong supporting cast includes Nick Kroll, Natasha Lyonne and Saturday Night Live’s Sarah Sherman and Martin Herlihy.

5. Balls Up (Prime)

Remember when Peter Farrelly, one half of the brotherly duo that made ’90s gross-out comedy classics Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, directed the movie Green Book, which won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards? Well, he’s back, with a film starring Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser as condom designers who start a countrywide riot after assaulting a mascot at the World Cup in Brazil. Hope Farrelly saved some extra room on the mantle.
