Road trips are made ten times more enjoyable when you’ve got some lovely scenery to marvel at. Our roundup of the world’s greatest road trips is packed with scenic journeys, from the Canadian wilderness to the Croatian coast – but which country boasts the best views of all, according to drivers who’ve cruised them all?
A new survey by DiscoverCars has set out to find the answer. They asked 6,449 drivers to rate the views they have driven through on a scale of one to 10, and each location was given an average score and ranked. Topping that list? The lush green vistas of Ireland.
The Emerald Isle gained an overall score of 9.52, but with a nickname like that, we’re hardly surprised. The truth is that while Ireland is a very, very rainy place, all those downpours are what keep the landscape so luscious.
Big-name drives include the Wild Atlantic Way, a mighty coastal route all the way from Donegal to Cork. Here you’ll pass legendary views such as Clew Bay, the Burren and the Fanad Lighthouse.
Second place on the list was New Zealand, which was named the world’s most scenic country in a recent ranking, and in joint third place were Portugal, home to the dazzling cliffs of the Algarve, and the UK, where the Lake and Peak districts as well as regions like North Wales and the Highlands likely helped its case.
