Time Out quizzed over 24,000 people to rank the best cities for food right now – and this Latin American capital took the top spot

If you’re anything like us, food is one of the biggest draws when planning where to travel. A city’s food scene is often the backbone of local culture, after all, and nothing beats the simple pleasure of an excellent meal abroad.
Every year, Time Out releases a definitive ranking of the world’s best cities to eat, based on the results of a survey of urbanites across the planet and backed by the votes of an expert panel of food critics and editors. The aim is to give kudos to the chefs, restaurants, markets and food stalls that feed the city, and to celebrate all the innovative stuff happening in our cities’ kitchens right now.
Topping the list of Time Out’s Best Cities for Food with Intrepid Travel this year is (drum roll, please...) Lima!
It’s not hard to see why the city landed this accolade. The Peruvian capital has a rep for harbouring some serious culinary talent – it’s currently home to the world’s best restaurant in Maido, with several other venues featuring on the latest World’s 50 Best list.
As our local writer Friedrich Reip writes: ‘Hardly a week goes by without a hot-ticket new restaurant setting up shop in the Peruvian capital, but Lima's Boho district Barranco recently saw a particularly high-profile opening: in March, Rodrigo Fernandini – who made a name for himself directing Peruvian fine-dining restaurants in Florida and New York – inaugurated his first flagship local, Fernandini.’
Reip recommends checking out tiny patisserie El Pregón de las Once, where the team ‘gives nowadays widely forgotten historic Peruvian desserts a new life’.
