There are gorgeous places all over the planet – just check out our list of the world’s most beautiful – but islands, by nature, are pretty paradisical. They’re isolated, surrounded by water, and many are bordered by lovely, powder-soft sand. But of all the world’s atolls, islands and islets, which is the best-looking?
That’d be Bali, according to a new ranking by Travelbag. The holiday booking site has ranked 45 of the world’s most popular long-haul island destinations (based on flights from the UK) according to the number of Instagram hashtags for each, with the Indonesian island storming into first place.

It’s apparently garnered a staggering 75.1 million hashtags, but we’re hardly surprised. Bali is one of the planet’s ultimate island destinations, popular for surfing (head to Kuta Beach), hiking (we’d check out Mount Batur or on an adventure to Tegenungan Waterfall), and wildlife (go hang out with some macaques at Ubud’s Monkey Forest or check out West Bali National Park). Sri Lanka, also appropriately known as the ‘pearl of the Indian ocean’ claimed second place with 18 million hashtags, and Cuba claimed third with 15.3 million. Read on for the rest of the world’s most picturesque islands – do you agree?
