From an Irish castle to a German library, here’s where to head to for a ghostly getaway this October

After that long and sometimes insufferably hot summer, it feels like Halloweekend has rattled towards us faster than ever before. But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to book a spooky place to stay.
Handily, Airbnb has produced a roundup of the eeriest apartments and homes on offer across Europe, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
After something … grand? Well, San Giusto Abbey in Tuscany could hit the mark. The building’s medieval tower features arched windows, cast iron four-poster beds, chilling bare brick walls and floors and looming, beamed ceilings.
Alternatively, head to Lucca if you’re travelling in a slightly bigger group. Here, there’s another mediaeval tower on offer, this time in the town centre which can accommodate up to six guests – and it’s dripping in old-timey details like candle chandeliers and gargoyle taps.
In Walkendorf, Germany, the Library Apartment in Rensow Manor House is a rustic hideaway full of nooks, crannies, curious and slightly creepy bric-a-brac and general, Halloweeny-aura. If you’re a fan of the dark academia aesthetic, this one is definitely for you.
Lastly, for a vibe which is strangely haunting and homely, consider the mini castle in Ireland – it’s got an imposing exterior, but inside has been furnished with enough floral sofas, rugs and dated looking furniture to instead feel like a grandparent’s house.
